Hello and Welcome! I’m Tiffany Yaker and as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor I believe it takes courage and strength to decide to meet with a therapist. I am so happy that you have taken the steps needed to explore your options. I would be honored to be a part of your journey.
In my practice, I focus on helping my clients to develop the tools that they need to cope with all of life’s challenges. I help individuals and families to gain strength from past adversities and to gain freedom from past trauma in order to manage current symptoms relating to anxiety and depression.
I have worked for many years to support families with their children ages 5 through 21 years old. I am an alumnus of and have 17 years of experience working as a School Counselor in Maryland’s Montgomery County Public Schools. I have a Bachelor of Science specializing in Special Education & Rehabilitation with an emphasis in Deaf Studies from the University of Arizona and completed my Master of Science in School & Clinical Counseling from Johns Hopkins University in 2001. Which means that I have been working in the mental health and educational field for over two decades!
I am currently accepting new patients. Contact me today to learn more and to schedule a complimentary consult call prior to arranging an in-office appointment. I am fully committed to helping you and your family through this process.
I help with healing after divorce, exploring academic difficulties, school related challenges, building resiliency & self-confidence, managing difficult behaviors, responding to peer pressures, and rebuilding families that have been broken.
Developmental milestones can be both joyful and quite challenging. The entire family system can be affected in the process and, at times, parents might be contributing to the adolescent’s problems.
I see each client and their family as a puzzle. Sometimes the pieces fit together perfectly and other times it is necessary to put our heads together to find the right piece to complete the puzzle.
I will help to uncover what is troubling your child and will improve their relationship with you and your entire family. I use a variety of techniques and strategies – play therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, expressive therapy, family therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, and solution-focused therapy and systemic family therapy. I believe that adolescents are part of a larger system, including parents, siblings, schools, etc., and therefore, I strive to work with and include all aspects of the family in treatment.
Systemic family therapy focuses on the multiple systems that impact your child. Your teenager is a part of your immediate family, your extended family, a member of their friend group, a resident of Palm Beach County or Broward County, a student at their home school or a private school of choice, and a teammate on a sports team. On a larger scale, they are a part of the systems that they culturally identify with – based on age, race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. All these dynamics and shifting systems make up who they are, how they relate to others, and how others relate to them. Systemic therapy is successful because the therapist is in tune with the impacts and pressures from these various dimensions of identity.
Everyone has unique needs and therefore the treatment services will be individually tailored to most effectively meet your identified needs. While my approach to therapy has many layers, my goal is to help you to begin to feel better and see change in your life as quickly as possible.
At Therapy with Tiffany’s, I work to encourage individuals and families to maintain appropriate focus on their strengths and their abilities in order to reach their desired goals. I am committed to creating and reinforcing hope. As your therapist, I will assist you in identifying your strengths, and coach you through shifting your focus from conflict to growth and then to discover opportunities.
I will work with you and your family to achieve goals which will be identified in a treatment plan which will be shared with you after your first few session. As your therapist, I will address topics such as communication patterns & styles, parent & child expectations, responsibility, trust, fair & loving consequences, family routines & distribution of household duties, power dynamics & family structure.
You have the right to keep all information regarding your treatment private. Your engagement in services will not be disclosed by your therapist without your written permission. Information will be shared without client consent in situations of someone saying they are going to hurt themselves or someone else, if there is any concern or belief of abuse or neglect. Minors are welcome to attend with their parents & when the parent is not present in the session, they can expect to receive a bulleted HIPAA protected email summarizing the topics covered, along with supplemental skills to reinforce from your home. We will further discuss confidentiality more in-depth in your first session.
